Standards of Excellence Delivering Exceptional Performance and Results The first person ever to break the four-minute mile running record was England's Roger Bannister. Interestingly, shortly after Roger Bannister achieved this feat, an Australian broke Bannister's time and set a new world record. In fact, the four minute mile was broken several more times by several other runners in just one year. It is safe to assume that this unusual accomplishment was not due to a sudden increase in the physical abilities of each runner who followed Roger Bannister. Rather, it is far more likely that it was due to a demonstrated raising of the standard of excellence. At the broadest level, a standard consists of pressure to achieve a required or expected level of performance and/or results. Standards define the level of performance a team deems acceptable. Standards of Excellence: Delivering Exceptional Performance and Results is specifically designed to help managers understand the value of having standards, how to clarify and set standards, how to express them in positive terms, and how to ensure that all standards are met.
